The Best 9-Hole Golf Courses in Benalmádena and Costa del Sol

Best 9-hole golf courses in Benalmádena and Costa del Sol, Spain
Benalmádena Golf, hole 3, early evening. Summer nights here are perfect for nine holes, and it's something you don't easily forget.

Not every round needs to be eighteen holes and five hours. Sometimes you have a morning, not a day. Sometimes you want to sharpen your short game, not fight a championship layout. And sometimes you are teaching a kid, or a partner, or yourself, and a big course is the wrong place to start.

That is what 9-hole golf is for. It is quicker, it is cheaper, and on the Costa del Sol there is plenty of it. Here are the courses worth your time, starting in Benalmádena and moving along the coast.

    Benalmádena Golf

This is our home course, so take that into account. But the facts speak for themselves.

Benalmádena Golf is a 9-hole par-3 course in the heart of Benalmádena. Every hole is a par 3, which means one thing: your short game gets a real test. The holes run from about 40 to 100 metres. Three of them play over water. The course sits on a hillside, so you get views of the sea while you play. You can finish a round in about an hour. If you want more, you can go round again.

You do not need a handicap. You do not need a full set of clubs. A wedge, a nine iron and a putter will do. That makes it one of the easiest places on the coast to start playing golf, and one of the best places to practise if you already do.

The driving range is the other reason people come. It has 48 bays over two floors, all floodlit, so you can hit balls in the evening after work. There is a putting green and a short game area next to it. The golf school runs classes for every age and level using the TPI method, and it has real form with junior golf.

Access is easy. The course is right by the motorway exit, so it is a short drive from both Málaga and Marbella. Green fees are low, and there is an unlimited day rate if you want to play more than nine.

If you are near Benalmádena and you want quick, honest golf without the fuss, this is the one.

    La Noria Golf, Mijas

La Noria sits between Fuengirola and Marbella, near La Cala de Mijas. It opened in 2003 and it is a proper 9-hole course, par 33, with a mix of holes. Some ask for accuracy, others ask for distance. It is well kept and it looks good, and it works as a real round rather than just a practice session. If you want something a step up from a pure par-3 course but still short, this is a solid choice.

    Cerrado del Águila, Mijas

Just west of Fuengirola, Cerrado del Águila is a 9-hole par 35. It plays longer than most of the short courses on this list, so you get to use more of your bag. It comes with a resort and good facilities, which makes it easy to turn a round into a longer visit. Good for players who want a real test without committing to eighteen holes.

    El Candado, Málaga

On the east side of Málaga city, El Candado is a 9-hole course with a long history and a loyal membership. It has a floodlit practice tee, a junior academy and a proper clubhouse. It leans more towards being a members' club than a tourist course, so check access and tee times before you drive out. But if you are staying near Málaga and want quick golf close to the city, it is worth a look.

    Alhaurín Golf, the par-3 course

Alhaurín Golf sits inland in the Sierra de Mijas, between Mijas, Alhaurín el Grande and Coín. It is best known for its 18-hole course, but it also has a 9-hole par-3 layout designed by Seve Ballesteros. That is a rare thing, a short course with a real designer behind it. It is a good place to work on your game, and the setting in the mountains is worth the short drive from the coast.

    Further west along the coast

If you are staying nearer Marbella and Estepona, there are more short courses within reach. Guadalmina, near San Pedro, has a par-3 short course alongside its two full-length layouts. El Higueral, up in the hills of Benahavís, is a 9-hole par 36 that plays like a proper course and gets strong reviews. Greenlife, near Elviria, is another 9-hole par-3 option good for beginners and short-game work. Any of these makes a good half day if you are based further west.

What about eighteen holes near Benalmádena

If you decide you want the full round, the big neighbour is Torrequebrada, an 18-hole par 72 that opened in 1976 and is one of the best-known courses on the coast. It is a different day out and a different price, but it is ten minutes away if the mood takes you.

    How to choose

It comes down to what you want from the day. If you want to learn, practise your short game, bring the family or just play quick golf close to Benalmádena, a par-3 course like ours is the right call. If you want a fuller round with longer holes but still only nine of them, La Noria, Cerrado del Águila or El Higueral will give you that. And if you want to hit balls under lights after work, the range at Benalmádena Golf is hard to beat.

The good news is that none of these are far apart. On this coast you are never more than a short drive from a course. Pick the one that fits your morning, and go and play.
